Important Update Regarding
SPEAR Remittances
Effective July 25, 2026
In accordance with Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. bylaw changes adopted at its 2026 Biennial Boulé regarding the Sigma Public Education and Research (SPEAR) Foundation, members submitting remittances to the SPEAR Foundation is no longer required.
As a philanthropic partner of the Sorority, the SPEAR Foundation remains committed to advancing community service, public education, advocacy, social science, and applied research initiatives that positively impact the communities we serve.
While remittances are no longer required, members who wish to continue supporting the Foundation may do so voluntarily.
Contributions may be submitted through our Community Impact Campaign and will be gratefully accepted as donations to the SPEAR Foundation. These donations will provide continued support for our programs, initiatives, and sponsorships.
Remittances submitted on or after July 25, 2026
If you submitted a remittance to the SPEAR Foundation on or after July 25, 2026, the Foundation’s Financial Secretary, Dr. Shakema Sanders, will contact you directly regarding next steps and the opportunity to request a refund or have the Foundation retain the funds as a charitable donation. Are remittances submitted on or after July 25, 2026 eligible for reimbursement?
Yes. Remittances received by the SPEAR Foundation on or after July 25, 2026, following the change adopted at the 2026 Biennial Boulé of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., are eligible for reimbursement upon request.
If a refund is requested, will the local chapter reimburse the member or will the SPEAR Foundation issue the refund?
For eligible funds that were remitted to the SPEAR Foundation, the Foundation will issue the refund directly to the chapter financial officer or individual member who submitted the payment, as applicable.
If funds were already remitted to the SPEAR Foundation after July 25, are they automatically considered charitable donations and therefore nonrefundable?
No. In alignment with SPEAR’s current Operating Agreement with Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., remittances received after July 25 are no longer required. Eligible chapters and individual members may request that those funds be returned or may elect to allow the SPEAR Foundation to retain the funds as a charitable donation.
How will I know if my chapter or payment is eligible?
The SPEAR Foundation’s Financial Team is contacting eligible chapter financial officers and individual members directly with information regarding their payment and available options.
